A creative entrepreneur is someone who uses their creative or intellectual knowledge and skills to earn a living, usually as a business or as a freelancer. It differs from traditional entrepreneurs who have mainly focused on manufacturing and industrial products.

History, especially in the twentieth century, is full of people who turned their knowledge and creativity into a thriving businesses. Many of them have started businesses from home.

Walt Disney

Walt has many great quotes, but one that summarizes creative entrepreneurs, “I just hope we never lose sight of one thing – it started with a rat.” From movies to theme parks to Mickey Mouse and Disney products, it all comes down to Walt’s Mickey Mouse making since he lost the right to his most lucrative cartoon after going home on a train trip from New York. Walt used his imagination and artistry to build an empire that started with a cartoon mouse.

Thomas Edison

All innovators who are able to capitalize on their innovations and ideas can be considered creative entrepreneurs. These include Nikola Tesla, Alexander Graham Bell, and more modern-day inventors such as Joy Mangano, who started his empire with a self-articulating mop. Although these inventors created products that were widely produced, their business was built on ideas.

One of the most famous and widespread of these inventors was Thomas Edison, who invented moving pictures, electric lighting and much more. He had 1,093 patents for his ideas and inventions in the United States alone.

Steve Jobs

Most people don’t equate artistry and computer programming, but most people don’t like Steve Jobs. Along with Steve Wozniak, Job created technology that was accessible to everyday people, but he also considered the aesthetics of the devices he created. His creativity was truly unique in his ability to develop products and services that people did not know they needed, such as the ability to carry thousands of songs on a small device or turn a portable phone into a computer and entertainment centre.

Ree Drummond

Although Ree is not as popular with the general public as many of the creative entrepreneurs listed above, if anyone watches The Food Network, shops at Wal-Mart or loves reading lifestyle blogs they will probably find out about him, at least by his more famous Monica; Pioneer woman. As a wife and mother living on a ranch in Oklahoma, Drummond started a blog in May 2006 to share her photographs and recipes. As of 2009, her blog received 13 million page views a month. In addition to the proceeds from his blog, Drummond has been able to write a memoir and cookbook of his creative success, a cooking show on the Food Network, and a line of cookware sold at Wal-Mart.

The hallmark of a creative entrepreneurial business is that you use your intellectual or creative resources to make money. There are hundreds of different ways to do this depending on your skills, knowledge and creativity. Here are some ways in which other entrepreneurs have done it.
